About Us > > > Marine Acoustics Inc.

Marine Acoustics, Inc. (MAI) is a specialty engineering consulting firm, providing the state-of-the-art scientific, engineering, management, and technical services to government and military, academic, and commercial clients in support of a broad spectrum of environmental and underwater acoustics and warfare technology programs. The strength of our organization is in the quality of our professional staff. Our staff members are highly skilled, educated, and experienced people who insist on excellence in all their endeavors. They have come to MAI with a variety of military, academic, and industry backgrounds.

Environmental Services. MAI's environmental expertise comes from a depth of experience in research and preparation of environmental impact documentation, including successfully completed and accepted environmental impact statements for the North Pacific Acoustic Laboratory Source and for the Surveillance Towed Array Sensor System (SURTASS) Low Frequency Active (LFA) Sonar. In addition, MAI has researched and prepared a large number of Environmental Assessments (EAs) and Overseas EAs (OEAs) for the testing and deployment of various technologies by the Navy and its contractors. MAI addresses the effects of underwater sounds from acoustic systems, aircraft, and explosive weapon impacts on the marine environment. In many of these cases, MAI has employed its proprietary Acoustic Integration Model© (AIM) to perform analytical and experimental modeling to predict and quantify sound exposures. MAI's staff includes acoustics engineers and marine biologists who are in great demand for the quality and depth of services performed. Current projects include: a Supplemental EIS for the SURTASS LFA Sonar, including the direction of several experiments to gain insights into the effects of sound on mammals as well as fish (NAVSEA and CNO); environmental documentation for the next rounds of ONR's LWAD at-sea testing; a study to assess the feasibility of using a thermal infrared camera for marine mammal mitigation during sensitive at-sea tests and operations (for ONR); an education outreach program with University of Rhode Island: Discovery of Sound in the Sea; and, most recently, production of an EIS for seismic exploration in the Gulf of Mexico.

UnderSea & Anti-Submarine Warfare1. MAI designs, manages, and conducts at-sea field tests and training involving multiple platforms. We are responsible for operational liaison, test conduct, system test and operation, data collection and analysis, and pre- and post-test logistic support. Programs covered include the Office of Naval Research Littoral Warfare Advanced Development (LWAD) sea test program, ONR's Multistatic Test & Evaluation Program, and the Fleet re-introduction of the SURTASS LFA Sonar System.

Naval Tactics Training. MAI is embarking on a project to develop a curriculum and conduct training for the Navy in Antisubmarine Warfare doctrine and tactics.

Research and Development. MAI's engineers and scientists are furthering the development of a variety of new technologies. Our Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) projects have included MATLAB-based signal processing for dense fields of miniature impulsive sources and sonobuoy receivers for the Naval Air Systems Command, and a measurement and prediction tool for the effects of sonic booms on the marine environment. Our Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) projects include a novel approach to physics-based modeling of acoustic reverberation, for use in undersea warfare, and the commercialization of the Integrated Marine Mammal Protection System (IMAPS) for local area monitoring of marine mammals (sub to SSI, Phase III). These STTR projects are well into or beyond Phase II.

1 The scope of MAI activities are limited to research and routine testing and training.  While these activities may support ongoing military or governmental programs and involve the deployment of systems or technologies, they do not take place in war-zones or other areas of conflict, nor are they a direct part of foreign or domestic combat support activities.
